Applications
In vitro test for the quantitative determination of
HCY concentration in serum or plasma on
photometric systems.
Homocysteine (Hcy) is a thiol-containing am
ino acid produced by the intracellular demet
hylation of methionine. Total homocysteine (t
Hcy) represents the sum of all forms of Hc y including forms of oxidized, protein bound
and free. Elevated level of tHcy has emerged as an important risk factor in the assess ment of cardiovascular disease. Excess Hcy i n the blood stream may cause injures to arte
rial vessels due to its irritant nature, and res ult in inflammation and plaque formation, w
hich may eventually cause blockage of blood
flow to the heart.
